A platform for monitoring and reporting emissions from point sources in Denmark.
PULS is a system for reporting and monitoring master data and discharge data from various point sources such as wastewater treatment plants, rain-induced outlets, aquaculture facilities and bathing water. The system is used by wastewater authorities to ensure compliance with environmental requirements and monitor the discharge of pollutants into the aquatic environment. The system is also used to monitor bathing water quality, including the allocation of blue flags.
PULS is a database where authorities can report data on emissions from point sources and perform calculations on compliance with conditions and substance quantity emissions. The system covers several types of point sources, including:
Wastewater treatment plants: Registration of discharges from wastewater treatment plants.
Rain-induced outlets (RBU): Discharges from sewers that handle both wastewater and rainwater.
Aquaculture facilities: Fish farms and other aquacultures.
Bathing water: The system also collects bathing water data from the municipalities, which enables reporting on the water quality of bathing beaches and other recreational areas.
For wastewater authorities and municipalities
PULS allows authorities to monitor discharges from wastewater plants and other point sources. They can record and report compliance with environmental conditions and ensure that no more pollutants are emitted than allowed. For example, a municipality can use PULS to monitor emissions from a local wastewater treatment plant and ensure that the requirements for the discharge of pollutants are complied with.
For the Danish Environmental Protection Agency (Miljøstyrelsen)
The Danish EPA can use the system to collect data from all over the country, monitor discharges at a national level and assess whether Denmark complies with EU directives for wastewater management. They can also draw nationwide reports from PULS on nutrient discharges from aquaculture facilities to ensure that they do not contribute to the eutrophication of nearby water bodies.
With PULS, Danish wastewater authorities and the Danish Environmental Protection Agency (Miljøstyrelsen) get a tool to monitor the discharge of pollutants and ensure compliance with environmental requirements. The system centralises reporting and reporting and supports national and local authorities' work to protect the aquatic environment.
