About Danmarks Miljøportal

Danmarks Miljøportal is a public partnership owned by the state, municipalities, and regions. Its purpose is to support digital environmental management in Denmark

Baggrundsbillede

The goal of Danmarks Miljøportal is to ensure that environmental data is considered early in all decisions that impact the environment. We do this by creating easy and open access to environmental data, enabling authorities and businesses to integrate environmental concerns into their decision-making.

This includes decisions directly related to the environment—such as water plans, green tripartite agreement (grøn trepart), biodiversity, and nature restoration—but also broader decisions on renewable energy, climate adaptation, new roads, residential areas, and industrial developments, where environmental aspects must be integrated.

The world's best environmental data?

Danmarks Miljøportal is owned by the state, municipalities, and regions, and increasingly receives data from businesses and researchers. More than 150 organisations contribute data to Danmarks Miljøportal.

Thanks to this shared approach to environmental data, Denmark has some of the world’s best environmental data. Danmarks Miljøportal provides access to over 1,300 map layers, 55 million species observations, and 70 million water environment observations. The core principle is that all data is freely available to everyone.

Who uses Danmarks Miljøportal—and how?

We have more than 200,000 direct users of our systems. Our users include municipalities, regions, the state, NGOs, research institutions, citizens, businesses, consultants, IT companies, utility providers, the construction industry, the financial sector, and the agricultural sector.

Here are a few examples of how environmental data is used:

  • Green tripartite agreement: Identify which areas provide the greatest value for land use change.

  • Climate adaptation: Enable planning based on expected climate change and assess the need for investments in climate adaptation.

  • Pollutants: Access data on pollutants across wastewater, groundwater, surface water and soil contamination and assess the need for action.

  • New projects and plans: Evaluate the overall environmental impact of new projects and plans to integrate environmental considerations into decisions on new businesses, renewable energy, and infrastructure.

  • Home buying: Get information about your property and environmental aspects such as soil contamination.

  • Outdoor recreation: Find protected natural areas and explore biodiversity, species, and the state of aquatic environments.

In addition to our direct users, we have approximately 3 million indirect users who access our data through system integrations.

Our IT systems

Danmarks Miljøportal operates 30 different IT systems. These systems can be divided into the following categories:

  •  "Data In": Systems for registering data—for example, on wastewater, bathing water, surface water, nature, rats, land use, soil contamination, groundwater, and drinking water.

  • "Data Out": IT systems that provide access to data. These include Danmarks Arealinformation, ArealdataKemidata and Danmarks Naturdata.

  • Decision support systems: Specialised systems that present data for specific purposes. These include climate adaptation (KAMP), environmental assessments (EA-Hub and EA-Tools), and  green tripartite (MARS)

Given the volume and complexity of the data, we focus on creating solutions that are as simple and user-friendly as possible. We do this through consistent design, shared components, and increasingly through the use of artificial intelligence. We believe AI can help democratise access to data by making it easier for users to find and understand the information they need.
